Winifred Atwell
Winifred Atwell was a West Indian born pianist who found great fame in London as a ragtime player. Her first hit was the Black and White Rag, made famous by her ‘other piano’ , a battered old instrument which she took around the world with her.
Winnie settled in Australia and had a successful career here too. She often spoke out against the third world conditions suffered by many of Australia’s Aboriginal population.
Winifred Atwell died in the home of a friend at Sydney’s Northern Beaches in 1983. I was fortunate to obtain several candid photographs of Winnie which I have posted on the site. They show her in various places, but in all, she seems self assured, confident and happy.
